Spring cleaning is just around the corner. We tend to use this time to clean out areas that aren’t necessarily seen but need a good “going over” once a year. Your air ducts should be one of those places. Dirty air ducts can be responsible for allergies and other respiratory problems. Dirty air ducts can be the cause of higher energy bills as well. Here are three indicators that your air ducts may need cleaning.
1. Higher Than Normal Energy Bills
This indicator is probably the easiest to notice. Dust and debris build-up within your air ducts result in decreased air flow. This means the furnace motor has to work harder. The harder the motor needs to work, the higher your energy costs.
It is good to have your ducts cleaned after any renovation in your home. Renovation dust and debris can easily pile up inside the air ducts of your home. Also, if your home is a brand new construction, ask the builder if the ducts have been cleaned prior to your move-in date.
3. Rural Areas and Dust-prone Locations
Have you ever lived in an area where no matter how often you dust, you can still write your name on the table by the next day? Two major culprits for a dusty home are rural areas with dirt roads and arid/windy locations.
You may want to consider having your ducts cleaned more often in such locations.
Cleaning your air-ducts at least once a year is a good practice. The longevity and efficiency of your furnace motor will greatly improve. Clean air-ducts are of great benefit to your health as well. You just might save a trip to your doctor this winter.
